Affordability of medical cannabis depends on where you live

Patients are paying dramatically different prices for medical cannabis depending on the country they live in, new research from CannIntelligence reveals.

The CannIntelligence medical cannabis price tracker, launched last week, shows that prices for medical oil products in Germany are more than 300% higher than in Australia.

For medical flower products, Germany is again the most expensive country, although for this category Israel is the cheapest.

Overall, prices have slightly declined during 2023, but differences between countries greatly outweigh this trend. The amount of THC that a product contains also has an influence on price, the research shows.

CannIntelligence’s tracker covers four of the largest medical cannabis markets in the world — Australia, Germany, Israel, and the UK.

“While much attention has been given to the milestone steps taken by certain countries in legalising medical cannabis, that’s only part of the story,” said Eva Antal, director of market analysis at CannIntelligence’s publisher Tamarind Intelligence. “Costs to individual patients, or healthcare providers, can also be a significant factor in determining how available medical cannabis really is in practice.”
