CBD industry warned about new
intoxicating cannabinoids shaking up the market
Consumers have an increasing appetite for cannabinoids that have a more intoxicating effect, which is shaking up the US CBD market, according to new research from CannIntelligence.
A quarter of consumers are already buying CBD and delta-8 products and more than 50% are using them for conditions that CBD-only products are used for, according to CannIntelligence’s recent market report into intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids (IHDCs) on the US market.
“This is a clear warning to the CBD industry as the stronger-felt effects of delta-8, and other IHDCs, might draw CBD consumers away from CBD-only formulations,” said CannIntelligence’s report.
IHDCs are intoxicating in the same way as licensed recreational cannabis products and their increasing use could also blur the lines between wellness and medicinal consumption.
They have entered the market as an unintentional consequence of the broad definition of hemp given in the 2018 US Farm Bill.
This has enabled certain industry players to come up with creative ways of producing products that contain levels of intoxicating cannabinoids that are likely to be illegal at a federal level.
So far, these first movers have been rewarded for their boldness but the legal arena remains precarious and everything could change if the definition is clarified.
In the meantime, the uncertainty of the legal situation is presenting a significant opportunity for many.
The most common IHDCs are:
- Delta-9 THC
- Delta-8 THC
- Delta-10 THC
- Delta-3 THC
- HHC
- HHC-O
- THC-O
- THCh
- THCjd
- THCP
“Our analysis of the US market breaks down the significant impact that IHDCs could have if the current regulatory situation continues,” said CannIntelligence’s head market analyst, Nate Erskine. “If you’re in the CBD business, IHDCs should be on your radar and not simply ignored in the hope they will disappear.”
