Australia is a highly restrictive market for CBD, with limits on growing and extraction and an absolute prohibition on CBD in consumer products. Only approved CBD-containing medical products are allowed on the market.

Any extract of cannabis – including CBD – is considered an illegal narcotic or a medicine and only allowed on the market if a pharmaceutical or medical licence is obtained in advance, irrespective of THC content.

Hemp can be farmed and exported provided a licence from the relevant sub-national entities is obtained, but legitimate uses for the plant are limited.
