Colombia’s new president out to end ‘war on drugs’ and legalise recreational use

Colombia’s first leftist president says the “war on drugs” has failed and it is now time to look to formerly prohibited crops such as cannabis to boost the country’s economy.

Gustavo Petro, who was elected president in June, emphasised throughout his campaign that he would push to pass legislation to legalise cannabis and possibly other currently illegal substances in an attempt to end the so-called “war” that plagued the country for decades.

And this month, just four days after taking office, he asked: “What would happen if cannabis was legalised in Colombia without requiring licences, similar to how corn is harvested, or potatoes?”
