29th November 2024: Denmark: The government and a majority of the parliament have agreed to make the trial scheme with medical cannabis permanent from 2026. This ensures that patients with serious illnesses, such as cancer, and chronic pain can continue to access medical cannabis prescribed by doctors. Minister of the interior and health Sophie Løhde said the agreement guarantees patients safe access to alternative treatments that have shown significant benefits during the trial period. The deal also strengthens guidance for doctors and improves conditions for Denmark’s cannabis industry, including cultivation and export opportunities. The trial scheme was first introduced in 2018, and it opened the possibility in 2021 for companies to grow cannabis for medical use in Denmark.
19th November 2024: Denmark: The Danish government has announced plans to make the country's medical cannabis scheme permanent, following a positive evaluation of its trial programme introduced in 2018. The initiative aims to ensure continued access to legally prescribed medical cannabis for patients with severe conditions, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. Health minister Sophie Løhde emphasised the importance of maintaining a legal framework to support patients benefiting from these treatments. Today, she invited political parties to engage in discussions on formalising the programme’s legalisation.
5th September 2024: Denmark: Today, minister of interior and health Sophie Løhde announced a ban on products containing certain synthetic cannabinoids as well as a group of semi-synthetic substances. This will make it illegal as of tomorrow, 6th September, to import, buy, possess and sell the substances in question for other than medical or scientific purposes. The list of euphoric substances will be updated to include ADB-5Br-INACA, ADB-P-5Br-INACA, CH-PIACA, Cumyl-CB-MeGaClone, 5F-CumylPeGaClone and dibenzopyran.
20th June 2024: Denmark: The Danish Health Authority announced it will recommend a ban on upcoming semi-synthetic cannabinoids. Chief consultant Kari Grasaasen said: “There are new variations of these cannabinoids on the market all the time, even though we rush to assess them and set them up so that they can be banned – the illegal market is extremely inventive. Therefore, we are on our way with a recommendation that both current and future semi-synthetic cannabinoids become illegal to trade and possess.” Denmark has already specifically banned the semi-synthetic cannabinoid HHC.
4th October 2023: Denmark: Following an alleged gang-related shooting in Christiania – a community known for its open cannabis trade – and Copenhagen mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen’s push for a legalisation debate, prime minister Mette Frederiksen showed no support for legalisation, according to the press. “I don't want more drugs in Denmark, and I don't think it's the solution to the gang problem,” the prime minister said.
8th September 2023: Denmark: Following an allegedly gang-related shooting in Christiania – a community famous for its open trade of cannabis – Copenhagen's mayor, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, from the centre-left Social Democrats party, is holding a public meeting to debate cannabis legalisation. The government has denied the Copenhagen municipality's requests for permission to legalise cannabis on a trial basis five times. The meeting will be held on 18th September.
1st September 2023: Denmark: After an allegedly gang-related shooting in Christiania – a community famous for its open trade of cannabis – Copenhagen's mayor, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, from the centre-left Social Democrats party, said that legalisation of cannabis could help the violence problem. She said the consequences of the illegal market exceed the harmful effects of the product, press reports. A few days previously, the interior and health minister, Sophie Løhde, from the centre-right Venstre party, rejected a Copenhagen proposal to implement an experimental scheme to legalise recreational cannabis.
24th May 2023: Denmark: An executive order has already come into force, adding HHC to the list of banned euphoric substances.
2nd May 2023: Denmark: The Ministry of Health is planning to ban hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), press reports. Health minister Sofie Løhde told a news channel: “When new substances appear on the market that turn out to be dangerous, we must react. And we are doing that now.” No formal proposal has been submitted to Parliament.
