19th February 2024: US - Wisconsin: A Republican bill to legalise medical cannabis in Wisconsin will not be passed this year, press reports. The restrictive proposal would have prohibited patients from using smokable flower and would have limited distribution to five state-run dispensaries.
9th January 2024: US - Wisconsin: Republican legislators have outlined a proposal to legalise medical cannabis in the state, press reports. Though the bill has not yet been posted on the legislature’s website, legislators indicate that it will have nine qualifying medical conditions and include state-run dispensaries. The proposal comes at the urging of Democratic governor Tony Evers, who despite pushing for legalisation of recreational cannabis, says that he would work with Republicans on a medical cannabis bill.
21st June 2023: US - Wisconsin: Governor Tony Evers has signed into law Assembly Bill 245, which is primarily aimed at revenue sharing and boosting local funding. However, it includes a provision preventing local governments from using non-binding advisory questions on the ballot, which have been used to gauge public support for cannabis legalisation. The provision restricts county boards from conducting countywide referendums for advisory purposes or validating resolutions without referendum approval. Although concerns were raised, the governor issued a statement that did not explicitly address the advisory question issue.
