Intoxicating but legal? Expert views differ as US firms take the risk on delta-9 THC

Hemp companies are taking a leap into the unknown, creating new products marketed to get the user high legally in all 50 US states. Industry experts disagree on whether these companies are risk-taking pioneers, or simply shortsighted.

The 2018 Farm Bill legalised hemp while defining it as any product containing 0.3% or less THC. Any product that contains more than 0.3% THC by dry weight is then defined as cannabis, which is a controlled substance.

THC is typically synonymous with delta-9, but it can also be extracted from hemp sources. Therein, some companies saw an opportunity.
