Alaska: Market and regulatory data analysis of the cannabis sector

13th May 2024: US - Alaska: House Bill (HB) 119 has been passed by the House and now heads to the Senate. HB 119 would change how recreational cannabis is taxed, moving from a $50 per oz wholesale tax to a 7% sales tax.
9th November 2023: US - Alaska: A group of hemp producers has sued the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to prevent enforcement of a new regulation that would treat hemp products that contain any amount of delta-9 THC or “a non-naturally occurring cannabinoid, including a cannabinoid made from an ingredient extracted from industrial hemp and modified beyond its original form” as cannabis products. The lawsuit claims that the regulation, which became effective 3rd November, violates federal law, specifically the 2018 Farm Bill, by treating hemp the same as higher-THC cannabis.
10th October 2023: US - Alaska: Lieutenant governor Nancy Dahlstrom has signed new regulations into law that attempt to bring intoxicating hemp products under the same supervision and requirements as recreational cannabis, press reports. The regulations would move sales of hemp products that contain any THC into regulated dispensaries, impose testing and labelling requirements, and levy taxes on the products. Hemp industry members reportedly intend to mount a legal challenge to the new regulations, which are supposed to take effect on 3rd November.
