Germany’s incoming coalition unlikely to roll back cannabis legalisation

In Germany, negotiations are advancing swiftly to establish a coalition between the centre-right Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CDU/CSU), which won the elections in February, and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which finished third. As the CDU/CSU leads coalition talks, its stance on cannabis will be central to shaping future policies.

Recently, the two parties have held exploratory talks concerning the potential coalition as the incumbent federal government, where the Union party has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the legalisation of cannabis by the outgoing government. However, despite the CDU/CSU and SPD holding differing views on the matter, it is unlikely that cannabis policy will be a central focus in these negotiations.
