Interest surges in ‘legal’ states in medicinal/recreational hybrids

Hybrid THC/CBD cannabis products – also called high CBD cannabis products – are on the rise in the US.

As non-pharmaceutically licensed medical use of cannabis expands, users in states where both medical and recreational forms are legal are starting to explore a wider range of products and businesses are experimenting to meet their needs.

Typically, cannabis used by consumers for medical purposes but unlicensed for that use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should be high in cannabidiol (CBD), one of the main active non-intoxicating cannabinoids found in cannabis, and low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the prime intoxicating substance found in the plant.

In fact in many states where medical cannabis has been legalised, there are strict limits on the level of THC that can be present in a product – generally no more than 0.2%.

But in the nine states where both medical and recreational cannabis is legal, observers have noticed a trend. Traditional CBD-only buyers are starting to look at hybrid CBD/THC products that have a significantly higher THC presence than would be allowed under medical cannabis provisions.
