The dust is starting to settle and the initial excitement – or even hype – around Malta becoming the first EU country to legalise recreational cannabis in some form is starting to fade.
On 14th December 2021, Malta’s parliament passed the historic and somewhat controversial “Authority on the Responsible Use of Cannabis” Bill, with 36 votes in favour and 27 against. It was signed into law by Malta’s president George Vella four days later, after he rejected calls from opponents to refuse to do so.
