Recreational cannabis bill advances in Colombia’s Congress, backed by president

Though Colombia’s legislative efforts to legalise and regulate adult-use cannabis have failed in recent years, lawmakers and president Gustavo Petro are hopeful that a new bill will receive the congressional and Senate backing necessary to further develop the national cannabis market.

The new legislation, presented by congressman Juan Carlos Losada of the Liberal Party, includes regulation that would oversee the production, distribution and sales of cannabis in the South American country, as well as establish rules to prohibit use by minors and prevent addiction by consumers. The bill also seeks to create educational programmes to inform the public about the risks and benefits of cannabis consumption.
