The long road to EFSA authorisation for CBD as novel food in the European Union

In June 2022, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) broke some very bad news to CBD companies applying for their products to be authorised as novel food in the European Union, leading to a deadlock that is still preventing them from completing the compulsory assessment process.

Two years ago the agency announced that a new set of difficult and expensive-to-retrieve toxicological data was suddenly required in order for businesses to complete the assessment – even for those whose applications had already been validated.
